Season 5 of the small town romantic drama, Virgin River, is now streaming on Netflix, and boy is it one wild ride. Wondering what the age recommendation is for Virgin River? I’m breaking down all of the thematic elements, including its TV-14 rating, in my Virgin River Season 5 Parents Guide and Review. Here’s what parents need to know to help YOU decide if it’s appropriate for your family. As always, no spoilers!
Virgin River Season 5 Parents Guide + Review
Virgin River season 5 part one kicks off with 10 episodes on September 7, 2023. Season 5 part two will release the remaining two episodes on November 30, 2023. Like previous seasons, this one picks up right where we left off. Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) revealed that Jack (Martin Henderson) is not the father of her twins. Doc’s (Tim Matheson) grandson, Denny (Kai Bradbury), reveals his Huntington’s Disease diagnosis. Jack’s shooter is finally revealed, and thanks to Preacher (Colin Lawrence) Paige and Christopher are finally safe.
While a huge focus of season 5 focuses on Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack’s relationship, and of course leads to more trials and tribulations, this season does a phenomenal job incorporating other important story arcs. These storylines are well-written and never rushed. I felt they all complimented one another and the overall flow of the writing was effective, giving all of our key characters their moment to shine.
Key Takeaways in Virgin River Season 5
I kept coming back to one particular quote this season that I felt was exceptionally powerful. Lydie (Christina Jastrzembska) might not be a main character, but for me, she was a highlight when she said, “Everyone gets to be young. But not everyone is lucky enough to grow old.” Boom. Mic drop. Growing old is not guaranteed and is truly a privilege. That quote stuck with me the whole season long.
Although Hope (Annette O’Toole) is still dealing with the lasting effects of her TBI, and Doc is having an identity crisis being diagnosed with Macular Degeneration, they are both fortunate to grow old. We all have hardships, some more so than others. But it’s how you approach these obstacles. And hopefully, you become stronger because of them.

There is one scene in particular that is very violent. This scene includes a shooting as well as multiple people fighting one another. It is very suspenseful, and some blood is shown.

This is absolutely where Virgin River rightfully earns its TV-14 rating. Drugs are a big theme this season, both selling drugs, using drugs and overdosing on drugs. The violence that comes with drugs is also seen. Alcohol use and abuse is shown, and there is mention of mixing alcohol with Xanax.

What is the age recommendation for Virgin River Season 5?
Virgin River is not intended for kids. I would agree with the TV-14 rating, but I don’t necessarily feel 14 year old’s would enjoy this series. This is a series for us…and I’m here for it!
Overall Thoughts
Virgin River Season 5 answers a lot of questions, and leaves us with even more. This series is a very easy binge and leaves you wanting more.
Ultimately, Virgin River is a series about friendship and being there for those we love. I admire how the people of Virgin River constantly show up for their people. Living in this small town, you don’t have just one person in your corner, you have a whole community!
I’ll be counting down to the final two episodes later this season. But if I know one thing about Virgin River, it’s that season 5 will end with a bang like we would never expect!
