Now is the perfect time to start planning your road trip to enjoy the colorful leaves before they fade away and start to fall from the trees in preparation for winter. New England fall foliage season brings many people from near and far to the area for the beautiful scenery that creates a colorful backdrop for the perfect fall season photos. If you’re thinking about getting out to enjoy fall foliage in New England this year, then you’ll want to continue reading to learn when the best time to visit each New England area is.

When is Peak Fall Foliage in New England?

Around mid-September, to early October the leaves in Maine and New Hampshire start to turn color. Mid October is usually the peak fall foliage time in the upper New England states like Maine and New Hampshire whereas the southern states in New England could have more of a peak fall foliage season well into November.

Peak fall foliage pertains to the time of foliage season in New England when you’ll see the most vibrant colors resting on the leaves of the trees as they change color before shedding their leaves for winter. There are some recommended routes to drive in New England to experience the peak fall foliage season, and I’m going to share a few of them below to help you plan a scenic drive in New England this fall.

Connecticut

If you’re heading to or located in Connecticut then you’ll find the best fall foliage running along State Route 169. You’ll find some cider mills along this route that are a must-visit if you have some extra time during your fall foliage in New England trip.

Maine

Head along Route 1 to take Route 127 South where you’ll be able to fully take in all of the magical colors of fall foliage. Many recommend hiking or biking in Acadia National Park to witness the beautiful colors up close.

Massachusetts

Mohawk Trail will be the best place to drive along if you’re looking for peak fall foliage in New
England. This area has the most vibrant colors on the trees during late October into early November. If you have time drive up Mount Greylock to get a panoramic view of the New England fall foliage.

New Hampshire

The best area in New Hampshire to experience peak fall foliage in New England is the White Mountains region. Drive up to the summit of Mount Washington and enjoy the world below as you take in that fall beauty that’s known as fall foliage in New England.

Rhode Island

As one of the best-known places for producing wine, you’ll surely have to visit a winery while in Rhode Island. Once here, your best place to experience the most vibrant of colors upon the leaves is the historic boat tour known as Blackstone Valley Explorer. Get a breathtaking view of fall foliage in Rhode Island via boat as you experience a little history lesson.
