Season 3 of Virgin River kicks off on Netflix, July 9, 2021. There’s a lot in store this season, but is it okay for tweens and teens? I’m breaking down all of the thematic elements, including its TV-14 rating, in my Virgin River Season 3 Parents Guide and Review. Here’s what parents need to know to help YOU decide if it’s appropriate for your family. As always, no spoilers!

Virgin River Season 3 Parents Guide

VIRGIN RIVER Season 3 Parents Guide + Review

Virgin River is a Netflix original series that I have been hooked on since day one. If you’ve been watching, then I know you’re nodding your head right along with me. With only 10 episodes per season, a captivating story, and exceptionally likeable characters, it’s an easy series to binge.

Season 2 ended with one heck of a cliffhanger, so I was more than thrilled when Netflix announced Season three’s release date not even 8 months later! Of course Season 3 ends with multiple cliffhangers, so fingers crossed we won’t have to wait too long!

This is a series that is going to be extremely enticing for the teen crowd. I can almost guarantee it will be a featured #1 on Netflix spot, so they will for sure be very tempted to give it a watch.

Is Virgin River Kid-Friendly? Here’s Your Parents Guide:

Netflix’s Virgin River has a TV-14 rating. This means it might have some content not intended for children under 14 years old. Season 3 features 10 episodes with each being about 42 minutes in duration. As a parent, there’s a few things you need to know about this series. Let’s take a closer look at some of the questionable thematic elements.

Language

There isn’t much in regards to language, thankfully. You might hear words like hell, bullsh*t, and stupid. Lizzie also calls her boyfriend, Ricky, “dummy,” as a term of endearment — which makes me cringe every single time. Overall, the language is very light.

Violence

A few punches are thrown, as well as some pushing and shoving. There are also flashbacks to the night Jack was shot.

Mature Content

There are several different relationship storylines in Virgin River. Some of the characters engage in sexual relations, however, no explicit nudity is shown. You will see men without shirts and women in a bra.

There is mention of rape, as well as selling drugs. There is also drug abuse and someone is drugged. Alcohol is also consumed.

There is also a death of one of the characters, which could be upsetting and triggering to some. Pregnancy loss is another topic discussed.

Age Recommendation

While Virgin River sure has its share of drama, I would agree with the TV-14 rating. I feel kids ages 14 and up would enjoy this series. However, I always encourage parents to watch along with their children.

VIRGIN RIVER (L to R) GWYNYTH WALSH as JO ELLEN, JENNY COOPER as JOEY, NICOLA CAVENDISH as CONNIE, JANET GLASSFORD as JUNE, and TIM MATHESON as DOC MULLINS in episode 304 of VIRGIN RIVER Cr. COURTESY OF NETFLIX © 2021

Overall Thoughts

There’s A LOT going on in season 3 of Virgin River. Almost too much. Don’t get me wrong, the stories are compelling and engaging, but with only 10 episodes I feel it’s a bit rushed. There’s just too many BIG storylines happening.

I love Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel Monroe, and Martin Henderson as Jack Sheridan. And let’s face it, their chemistry is FIRE! But my goodness their relationship frustrates me! They go back and forth just way too much.

Aside from our two main characters, season 3 brings so much to the table with our other favorites. Doc is navigating his new diagnosis, Brady is always up to something, Preacher and Christopher have their own struggles, and “The Girls” have a lot going on, too. Oh, and how could I forget Charmaine? She’s always a trip and brings a whole lot of drama.

I will say that these storylines all hold their own and they don’t feel jumbled or out of place, and they certainly deserve to be told. I guess I just wish the season was more than 10 episodes!

This season jumps right in where last season left off, and the excitement doesn’t stop. I watched this season in 3 days, but you could easily do it in one day. It’s a binge lovers dream!

It’s no secret that Netflix would end season 3 of Virgin River with many cliffhangers — and boy are there some good ones! I have A LOT of unanswered questions. Is it too early to start a countdown to season four? I need answers!!!

Overall, this season of Virgin River will leave you right where you started — wanting more.
