I’m breaking down all of the thematic elements in my Trolls World Tour Parent Movie Review to help YOU decide if it’s safe for kids. As always, no spoilers!

Whenever there’s a sequel of a movie, there are two types of people. The first one is those who are excited to see some of their favorite characters reprise their roles and set off on a new story. The other type cringe at the thought. Why mess with a good thing? I am happy to tell you that Trolls World Tour is definitely NOT cringe worthy. While I wouldn’t say it is better than its predecessor, this film brings a lot to the table. There are countless life lessons and moments that will leave you saying, “Wow.” Its theme is very relevant in today’s day in age.
Trolls World Tour Celebrates Diversity
A huge theme in the sequel is diversity. Our differences make us who we are, and ultimately, we are better together. King Quincy says it best, “Denying our differences is denying the truth of who we are.” We are all different. Not one of us is the same. That’s what makes us unique. Don’t be afraid to be yourself! Let’s embrace and celebrate our differences! OWN WHO YOU ARE!!
The Music
How did the soundtrack measure up to the original in Trolls World Tour? Well, you really can’t top “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” However, that’s not to say there aren’t catchy tunes in the sequel! There’s a lot of variation in different music genres, which makes it really fun and interesting. Again, the music is even keeping on theme with its diverse selection. You’ll love the lyrics and beat of “Just Sing,” performed by Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake. You’ll be dancing in your seat, and might even jump up and have a dance party — my kids did!
Is Trolls World Tour Kid-Friendly?
Here we go. The reason you came to this movie review. Should your kids see Trolls World Tour? What ages would I recommend? Trolls World Tour is rated PG for for some mild rude humor. It has a running time of 95 minutes. It goes by exceptionally fast, and could have even been a bit longer! However, the time frame is the “sweet spot” for younger children.
Violence: There really isn’t much violence in this movie. Queen Barb does recruit bounty hunters to go get Queen Poppy. Ultimately there is a war, but it’s between music. If you’re a Marvel fan, you might see some similarities from a familiar story line. Really. You can’t miss it.
Language: I was overall really impressed with the lack of inappropriate language. However, there were a few words I want to mention. “You Suck” and “Screwed” were both used, but the one I really didn’t like was “Boy Toy.” Nope nope nope.
Adult Themes: There are plenty of butt jokes and innuendos, but what kids animated comedy doesn’t? What I didn’t care for was the “drug effect” the Jazz Troll had on Poppy and Branch. I have seen other movies do this, and I just don’t understand the point. Obviously my kids didn’t get the reference, and most children will not. It’s not there for kids, it’s there for adults, and it’s unnecessary.
Age Recommendation: As I said, Trolls World Tour is the perfect length for kids. They won’t get bored and the story will keep them engaged. There is a lot of music in this movie, and what child doesn’t enjoy music?! I would recommend Trolls World Tour for kids ages 5 and up.
Key Messages in Trolls World Tour
Never was I expecting this Trolls movie to be loaded with life-lessons. But here we are. I already addressed the importance the theme diversity plays in this film. My 10 year old son was able to take this message away from the movie. I loved that he was able to pick up on it. The world would be pretty bland and boring if we were all the same. Being different is just being you.
There is also a theme of friendship and teamwork. Poppy says, “There is no I quit in teamwork.” And even Queen Barb says, “Friendship takes time and years of mutual care and respect. You don’t just become best friends.” Friendship is earned. It is also important to actually listen to our friends and take their thoughts and feelings into consideration.
Overall Thoughts:
Trolls World Tour is an uplifting, fun, vibrant film that celebrates music and diversity. The soundtrack will make you want to get up and dance and leave you feeling happy. The theme of unity will bring us together and encourage us to appreciate and embrace our differences. This movie was released at the perfect time and is exactly what our society needs right now. If you’re looking for a family-friendly film, this is one you won’t want to miss. Trolls World Tour Synopsis:
Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake return in Trolls World Tour, an all-star sequel to DreamWorks Animation’s 2016 musical hit. In an adventure that will take them well beyond what they’ve known before, Poppy (Kendrick) and Branch (Timberlake) discover that they are but one of six different Trolls tribes scattered over six different lands and devoted to six different kinds of music: Funk, Country, Techno, Classical, Pop and Rock. Their world is about to get a lot bigger and a whole lot louder.
A member of hard-rock royalty, Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom), aided by her father King Thrash (Ozzy Osbourne), wants to destroy all other kinds of music to let rock reign supreme.
