To my sweet boy Lincoln, on the night before Kindergarten

My sweet boy, Lincoln,

I just tucked you into bed. I watched as your eyelids closed, and you drifted off to sleep. I softly kissed your cheek and whispered, “I love you.” Tonight is different than most nights. Tonight is the night before you start Kindergarten.
Tonight I read you the book, “The Night Before Kindergarten.” There was a moment in the book where the parents were crying, as they said goodbye to their children. You asked me why they were so sad. I had to explain that sometimes people cry “happy tears.” I told him those mommy’s and daddy’s were just so proud of their little boys and girls. You asked me if I was going to cry “happy tears” tomorrow.
While holding back my own tears, I didn’t directly answer your question. I just told you what an amazing little boy you are, how proud I am of you, and how much fun you’re going to have at school. All things that are so very true.
The truth is, I will cry happy tears…and maybe some sad tears as well. Growing up is sometimes hard when you’re a mommy. I love watching you learn and discover new things. You amaze me on a daily basis. But sometimes, it’s very bittersweet. Time has a way of sneaking up on us, and moving all too quickly.  It seems like not that long ago, I was rocking you to sleep, while you rested your head on my shoulder. And now here we are, the night before Kindergarten.
You are going to do great in school. Your little personality is so incredibly infectious, that you will shine. You have a strong desire to learn. You aren’t afraid to ask questions. You want to know why things are the way they are. At just five years old, you seem wise beyond your years. But most importantly, you have the kindest heart I have ever known. You are genuinely sweet.
You are a very special boy, Lincoln, and I am so proud to call you my son. Being your mommy is truly the greatest gift.
So tomorrow morning when I squeeze you extra tight, I hope you know how much I love you. How proud you make me. Each and every single day.
I love you, my sweet boy. Have the best first day tomorrow. I can’t wait to hear all about your adventures! You are going to move mountains, this I know.
Love you always,
Mommy
