You would think that flying is so much fun. After all, so many people opt to fly in and out of their destinations as a means to travel faster. The thing about flying is that it’s not always that fun, especially when you’re experiencing air travel with kids. No matter how well behaved your kids are, flights are usually pretty boring for them. And don’t forget, you’re stuck up there in the air with nowhere to go for quite a bit of time! This means kids get bored, they get hungry and whatever else happens when you’re experiencing air travel with kids. It’s always unpredictable! While yes, air travel with kids can be stressful, it doesn’t have to be. Today I’m going to share some tips for stress free air travel with kids so that you, and the other passengers, can safely enjoy your next flight with kids.
Tips for Stress Free Air Travel with Kids
Plan and Prep
This is the number one key to stress free air travel with kids; planning and preparation. The first tip is to pay attention to what time of day your kids do best and the seats that they may be better suited to sit in. This means you need to pay attention to your seats and the time of your flight or flights long before booking for air travel with kids. It’s important to ensure that the flight time will coincide as close as possible with your kids’ regular routine. Try not to disrupt snack time or something that they’re used to doing at a specific time. Keeping your kids happy, will keep EVERYONE happy!
Do Not Fly Hungry
There’s nothing worse than being in a plane with a hungry kid or two, seriously! Being grumpy because you’re hungry is a real thing! Avoid a case of being hangry by having your kids eat before the flight. Sure this may mean you bring snacks along or have to buy something at the airport. But, it’s well worth the time and money spent to have your kids enter that plane with a full tummy. One of the biggest eruptions of kids during air travel is due to their grumbly bellies. Pack a few of their favorite snacks to keep their tummies full and happy!
Dress Comfortably
Make sure that your kids are dressed in something that’s easily adjusted or comes off for restroom visits. Air travel doesn’t provide you with the most comfortable or spacious restrooms to use, so it’s best that your kids are dressed in comfortable attire that won’t be too difficult to take off during restroom visits. Comfortable clothing options will also work well to ensure that your kids may be able to nap during the flight so they arrive at your destination well rested.
Have Realistic Expectations
It’s important to discuss air travel expectations with your kids before getting on the plane. But remember, these are kids we’re talking about so anything can happen. It’s best that you bring things to entertain your kids during air travel, and to be open to adapting whenever necessary to have a stress free air travel with kids’ experience. You’ll soon find if you haven’t flown with kids before, that you’ll be required to adapt quite frequently throughout the flight, especially if flying with younger kids.
My Number One Tip
I’ve been flying with my kids since they were babies. Now at 5 and 9 years old, they are accustomed to flying, and know the routine. Travel with your kids when they’re young, and OFTEN if you can. Nothing can prepare them more for travel, then actively doing it! Make it a fun family adventure, and DON’T STRESS! These are family memories you’ll cherish forever!!
