While there isn’t quite anything like attending a press junket for a film in person, participating in a virtual press conference is really fun! Due to the pandemic, press events are obviously unable to be held in person. However, the entertainment industry has pivoted and is currently doing them virtually! I really love that we’re still able to connect with the cast and filmmakers in a different way. When I received the invite to The War with Grandpa Press Junket, I couldn’t respond “YES!” fast enough!
The War with Grandpa Press Junket
If you’ve ever been lucky enough to attend a red carpet event or press junket, then you are well aware of the plentiful photo opps! Virtually was no different with a fun photo booth! I think I look pretty fierce next to Robert De Niro, do you agree?
So how does a virtual press junket work? Honestly, it’s very similar to one in person…except everyone is on Zoom and at their house! The War with Grandpa junket was set up in three different panels. We first heard from Oakes Fegley and Laura Marano, who play siblings Peter and Mia. Next up were the filmmakers, Marvin Peart, Rosa Peart, and Tre Peart. And finally were supporting actors Jane Seymour and Cheech Marin. What a lineup!
Interview with Oakes Fegley and Laura Marano
Oakes Fegley costars alongside Robert De Niro in The War with Grandpa as his grandson, Peter. You might also recognize him from his role in Disney’s live-action film, Pete’s Dragon. Laura Marano plays his older sister, Mia. It was so fun hearing from such young talent. Oakes talked about working so closely with Robert De Niro as well as his favorite pranks from the movie (there are A LOT of them!). We also found out if Oakes and Laura are pranksters themselves, and if they played any on one another behind the scenes! You can watch the full interview below.
Interview with The Peart Family (Filmmakers)
The first thing that drew me to The War with Grandpa was its behind the scenes story. Tre Peart read the book when he was 8 years old. He then pitched the idea as a movie to his mom and dad, Marvin and Rosa Peart. They financed and produced the film. Tre’s parents were so incredibly supportive of their son, and they turned his vision into a reality. What an inspiration! I had the opportunity to talk to the family about this, and ask Tre how it felt to live his dream.
This was hands down my favorite interview panel. I loved watching the family dynamic between Tre and his parents. Also, here’s a fun fact for you…Tre is going to be honored in the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest film producer! How amazing is that?!
You can watch the entire video below!
Interview with Jane Seymour and Cheech Marin
Our final interview was with Jane Seymour and Cheech Marin. It was so surreal chatting with them. Jane is seriously flawless and so eloquent and Cheech was hysterical without even trying! In The War with Grandpa, they worked with other icon actors like themselves, Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken. They also had some outrageous scenes! I asked them about one of those scenes specifically, you can check it out below.
The War with Grandpa Synopsis
Sixth-grader Peter (Oakes Fegley) is pretty much your average kid-he likes gaming, hanging with his friends and his beloved pair of Air Jordans. But when his recently widowed grandfather Ed (Robert De Niro) moves in with Peter’s family, the boy is forced to give up his most prized possession of all, his bedroom. Unwilling to let such an injustice stand, Peter devises a series of increasingly elaborate pranks to drive out the interloper, but Grandpa Ed won’t go without a fight. Soon, the friendly combatants are engaged in an all-out war with side-splitting consequences.
Based on the award-winning book by Robert Kimmel Smith, The War with Grandpa is a hilarious family comedy featuring an all-star supporting cast: Christopher Walken, Uma Thurman, Rob Riggle, Cheech Marin, Laura Marano and Jane Seymour.
