Get ready for a swashbuckling adventure this summer with Netflix’s The Sea Beast! Filled with non-stop action from start to finish, The Sea Beast delivers a riveting tale. However, is The Sea Beast too scary for kids? I’m breaking down all of the thematic elements, including its PG rating, in my The Sea Beast Parents Guide and Movie Review. Here’s what parents need to know to help YOU decide if it’s kid-friendly. As always, no spoilers!

THE SEA BEAST Parents Guide + Movie Review
There’s nothing like an epic adventure at sea to welcome summer! Add in some sea monsters, likable, developed characters, and topped with superb animation, and you’re in for a MONSTROUS treat.
The Sea Beast’s story jumps right in from the get-go, and it never stops. And even though it’s action-packed, there are plenty of feel-good moments guaranteed to tug at your heart. The relationship between Jacob Holland (Karl Urban) and Maisie Brumble (Zaris-Angel Hator), will give you all the feels.
Although King Kong was an inspiration behind The Sea Beast, I couldn’t help but notice similarities to How To Train Your Dragon. However, no two stories are ever the same. The Sea Beast delivers a strong nautical narrative.

The Visuals
The animation department didn’t play around when developing the visuals for The Sea Beast. From the rippling water, to the precision of the ropes on the ships, The Sea Beast is a visual masterpiece. As thrilling and engaging as the storyline is, the cinematography blows everything out of the water (pun intended).

IS THE SEA BEAST KID-FRIENDLY? HERE’S YOUR PARENTS GUIDE:
Director Chris Williams mentioned that The Sea Beast is not specifically a kids movie. He wanted it to be enjoyed by all audiences, specifically those with an appreciation toward ships. With that being said, which ages is The Sea Beast best suited for?
Netflix’s The Sea Beast has an MPAA rating of PG for action, violence, and some language. It has a runtime of 1 hour 59 minutes. At pushing 2 hours, is this movie too long for little ones? Let’s break down the thematic elements and take a closer look.
Violence
Being an animated action adventure film, you can expect The Sea Beast to have its fair share of moments of peril. Right from the opening scene, you’ll realize this is going to be one bumpy ride! From ships being under attack, cannons firing, and use of weapons such as swords, bow and arrows, spears, and guns. Of course there are also the Sea Beasts, which can appear frightening for children. They are being hunted, and they are hunting.
Language
Honestly, for a PG rating, I was a bit surprised by the language. I counted three uses of the word “Hell.” Other phrases like, “kill a monster” and “bloody revenge” are also used.
Mature Content
The Sea Beast has an excessive amount of drinking. Entirely too much for a family film. I understand that drinking on ships is sort of a thing, but I don’t think it needed to be displayed. There is also the mention of debauchery. Take that as you will.
Age Recommendation
Unfortunately, I don’t think The Sea Beast is for younger children. While the 2 hour time duration is certainly too much, I also feel the content is geared more towards older kids. I see little ones getting antsy and bored. That’s not to say The Sea Beast is a bad film, because that’s far from the truth. I just see older kids, ages 10 and up enjoying it most.

Overall Thoughts
The Sea Beast delivers a strong riveting story that will appeal to ship-lovers and those who enjoy a good adventure movie. There’s a great message about what it means to be a hero might not be what you’ve always thought. Just because traditions have gone down in history, that doesn’t necessarily make them okay. Times change. People evolve and we become more educated. We should learn from history, not repeat it. I cannot help but notice how relevant this takeaway is today.
The Sea Beast deserves to be seen on a monster sized screen. So grab your popcorn and stream this epic adventure on Netflix July 8, 2022.
