The Marvels boasts a powerful trio of badass women, hinting towards a very bright future for the MCU. Wondering if The Marvels is kid-friendly? I’m breaking down all of the thematic elements, including its PG-13 rating, in my The Marvels Parents Guide and Movie Review. Here’s what parents need to know to help YOU decide if it’s appropriate for kids. As always, no spoilers!
THE MARVELS Parents Guide + Review
The Marvels takes us higher, further, faster, with the most family friendly MCU film in the franchise history. I said what I said. The film stars Brie Larson, reprising her iconic role of Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), along with Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel). The lineup featuring these leading ladies is everything, and I’m 100% here for it. As a parent movie reviewer, I especially appreciate that Marvel decided on a more kid-friendly approach this time around.
The Marvels opens with Carol’s powers becoming entangled with Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau. Whenever one of them uses their powers, they switch places with one another. Of course this strange turn of events leads to a great scene bouncing back between the three characters. What really makes this scene all the more incredible is Kamala’s family. They are freaking hysterical and we need so much more of them in the future.
When the trio finally realizes what is happening with their power entanglement, get ready for a whole lot of fun. One of my favorite scenes is when the three are hanging out together, testing their abilities and jump point techniques. This scene shows the amazing chemistry and bond that develops between The Marvels.
Visually speaking, The Marvels does not disappoint. It’s a real treat on the big screen, particularly the scenes on the other planets and in space. The jump point scenes blend seamlessly and don’t appear messy or choppy. Overall, for a lot of back-and-forth, the transitions are smooth and coherent.
Is The Marvels Kid-Friendly? Here’s Your Parents Guide:
Fans of the Ms. Marvel series are going to want to see The Marvels. Does that mean it’s okay for kids? The Marvels has an MPAA rating of PG-13 for action/violence and brief language. It has a runtime of 1 hour 45 minutes, making it the shortest MCU film in history. Here’s what parents need to know before watching The Marvels with their kids.
Language
For a Marvel movie, The Marvels is very tame in the language department — even more so because Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is in the film. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 dropped the first ever F-Bomb in Marvel history, The Marvels are way more toned down. Lookout words include: shit, damn, and a lot of Hell.
Violence
You can expect sci-fi and supernatural type violence that is seen in Marvel films. However, it’s not gruesome or bloody. Again, much like the profanity, the violence is toned down.
Mature Content
Death and grief play roles in The Marvels. We also need to mention that adorable Flerken, Goose, as well as the Flerkittens, who are even more adorable. Flerkens release tentacles out of their mouth and swallow literally anything, whether an object or person. Afterwards, they vomit it up. There is one scene in particular that is completely bonkers and so ridiculously silly, but it might bother some people.
Age Recommendation for The Marvels
Again, The Marvels is the most kid-friendly Marvel movie. If your child has seen literally any of the other films, then they will be more than okay. However, if you’re new to the franchise, taking the above thematic elements into consideration, I’d recommend The Marvels for ages 10 and up.
Does The MARVELS Have an End Credit Scene?
While not a post-credit scene, the very final scene in The Marvels sets up the future of the MCU, and we couldn’t be more excited. There is also one mid-credit scene that you won’t want to miss. The possibilities this scene opens up is endless and I cannot wait to see how it all plays out.
What Marvel movies do you need to watch before The Marvels?
I would recommend watching Captain Marvel to get a backstory on Carol Danvers. Also, the mini-series WandaVision for Monica Rambeau’s character, and Ms. Marvel for Kamala Khan and her fun family.
Overall Thoughts
The Marvels is a freaking blast. Iman Vellani is the true standout, you’ll be fangirling right along with her. Stunning visuals and a story that delivers humor and heart. The future of the MCU is in good hands, and we’re here for it! Also? That mid-credit scene has left me shook and is mind-blowing.
The Marvels Synopsis
Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau.
