I’m going to start off by saying this is NOT my typical movie review. Star Wars is an entire franchise…and honestly, one I’m not very familiar with. Shocking. I know. In fact, I haven’t even seen all of the films. However, I am a Disney fan…and a movie fan. I REALLY wanted to see Episode IX, but I didn’t want to be confused. I wanted to understand it. At least a little bit. I also cannot wait to visit Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and I think my experience with the land will be even better if I understand at least a portion of Star Wars.
I was informed that to understand The Rise of Skywalker, I should at least watch The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. So that is exactly what I did. I also turned to google for any questions I had about the characters or story line. And after that, I finally went to see the final chapter in theaters.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker | Thoughts from a Casual Fan
I will be the first to admit that I absolutely do NOT have the connection to the Star Wars saga like true fans. I feel like if you grew up watching these films, and eagerly awaiting the release of the next movie, you will have a much greater appreciation of the franchise than myself. That is not to say I didn’t enjoy The Rise of Skywalker. I just know I didn’t enjoy it like a “true” die hard fan, you know?
Having watched The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi definitely helped me understand the story. And I did love the characters. Rey is a true FORCE for girls to look up to. I love how she is so strong and powerful. Definitely a positive role model. The banter between Poe and Finn is hilarious. And I fell in love with BB-8!

Is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Kid-Friendly?
In almost all of my movie reviews I address this issue. Just because a movie is rated PG, does NOT mean it is suitable for all children. Episode IX is rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence and action. I chose to not take my two children with me to see this film. For starters, they haven’t seen the other movies. Yes. I know as a mom of two BOYS, this may seem shocking.
My two kids are 6 and 10. I know my 10 year old would enjoy The Rise of Skywalker immensely. BUT, I want him to watch the other movies first. He would love the science fiction, the story, and the great action sequences. I do feel like my 6 year old is too young for this movie. With a running time of 2 hours 22 minutes, I know he would get bored. There’s also a lot of violence that I don’t think he necessarily needs to see quite yet.
With that being said. If my kids have been watching these films since they were babies, I would probably have a different opinion for my younger son.
