Shazam! Fury of the Gods is truly a family affair, however, is the sequel kid-friendly? I’m breaking down all of the thematic elements, including its PG-13 rating, in my Shazam! Fury of the Gods Parents Guide and Movie Review. Here’s what parents need to know to help YOU decide if it’s appropriate for kids. As always, no spoilers!
Shazam! Fury of the Gods Parents Guide + Review
Shazam 2 kicks off with Shazam (Zachary Levi) himself having a major case of imposter syndrome. I can only imagine it must be tough bouncing back between saving the world, and being a typical teenager as Billy Baston (Asher Angel).
However, as much as I love both Shazam and Billy Baston, I don’t feel their characters reflect the same person like they should. In a way, Billy seems more mature than Shazam. Setting that issue aside, I feel Zachary Levi and Asher Angel both shine in their roles. I will say I wish Asher had more screen time…we just didn’t get to see Billy enough!
Speaking of “shining performances,” Jack Dylan Grazer is the standout as Freddy Freeman. He truly embodies his character, and honestly is freaking hilarious. I wish there were more scenes between him and Billy.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods has a lot going on. It’s very CGI heavy, almost to an extreme. While there are a few messy moments, overall they work with the story. Shazam 2 is about family, and this goes to say about the “villains” in the film as well. You can almost feel where they’re coming from.
IS Shazam! Fury of the Gods KID-FRIENDLY? HERE’S YOUR PARENTS GUIDE:
Shazam is a popular superhero among kids, because Billy Batson is a kid! This makes his character incredibly relatable and distinguishes him apart from other superheroes.
Shazam 2 has an MPA rating of PG-13 for sequences of action, violence, and language. It has a runtime of 2 hours 10 minutes. Here’s what parents need to know before going to see the Shazam sequel with your family.
Violence
There are several violence scenes in Shazam Fury of the Gods, very much on par with the first movie. Viewers can expect to see mass destruction, fighting with superhero powers, and weapons like swords. Some of the deaths are abrupt and a bit graphic. The most disturbing scene involves one character walking off a building to his death.
Language
Although the language isn’t terrible in Shazam 2, there are a few words worth mentioning. Expect to hear: Hell, shit, “balls,” ass, sucks, and one use of “motherf*” that cuts out.
Mature Content
A great deal of bullying is going on, mostly with Freddy Freeman’s character. What bothered me the most about this, is that teachers witnessed the bulling and ignored it. Billy Batson still struggles with abandonment issues, and his Shazam alter ego is battling imposter syndrome. One character comes out as gay. There is also suicide.
Age Recommendation
I feel that Shazam! Fury of the Gods is less intense than the original movie. There are definitely some moments of peril and somewhat scary mythical creatures. The 2 hour 10 minute time duration is very much felt. Shazam 2 has a very slow start. Once the movie picks up, the story is engaging, however, it seems to take awhile to reach that point. I could see little ones getting bored. I would recommend Shazam! Fury of the Gods for kids ages 10 and up. With that being said, if your younger ones have tendency to get antsy during longer movies, it might be best to wait to watch this one at home.
Overall Thoughts
Shazam! Fury of the Gods might start off slow, but once it gets going, buckle-up! It’s a pertinent film to the future of DC, and a fun watch overall. Shazam 2 boasts a message of everything having the ability to be worthy if only given the chance. There are two end credit scenes in Shazam! Fury of the Gods that you won’t want to miss. Shazam 2 will make you laugh, cry, and pull at your heartstrings. If you love a good superhero flick, don’t miss it!
