Walt Disney Studios Ralph Breaks the Internet hit theaters November 21, 2019. This highly anticipated sequel has been 6 years in the making. Did it live up to the hype? Is Ralph Breaks the Internet kid-friendly? Find out in my Ralph Breaks the Internet Parent Review. No spoilers!!
My children are huge fans of Wreck it Ralph. Who am I kidding. My husband and I enjoyed it just as much! We couldn’t wait to take our two boys, ages 9 & 5, opening day to see the sequel. Ralph Breaks the Internet had some big shoes to fill. That’s always the tricky things with sequels. They’re either unbelievably incredible (pun intended), or they’re a complete wreck (again, pun intended). There’s usually never an in between. Did Ralph Breaks the Internet live up to those high expectations?

NAVIGATING THE NET – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” video-game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz venture to the internet for a replacement part for her game, Sugar Rush. The world wide web is expansive and exciting with an elaborate transportation system Ralph and Vanellope find themselves squeezing into en route to one of their first internet destinations. Featuring the voices of John C. Reilly as the voice of Ralph, and Sarah Silverman as the voice of Vanellope.
Ralph Breaks the Internet Parent Review #RalphBreaksTheInternet
This film is FUN! The internet is a big, bright world. And while there are many exciting and positive things, with it comes an enticing dark underworld. The internet is a tool, and if you don’t use it correctly, you can get “sucked in.” There are some big talking points and messages in this movie that are great conversation starters you can have with your children.
What I loved about Ralph Breaks the Internet, is we really get a more in depth look at our two main characters, Ralph and Vanellope. While Ralph is happy with the same routine of their video game life day after day, Vanellope wants more. Belle would say she wants “adventure in the great wide somewhere.” Vanellope sees there is a whole new world out there in the internet, and she is inspired to chase her dreams. This bothers Ralph. He is content with just doing the same thing each day with his best friend. He doesn’t understand Vanellope’s desire for wanting more in life. I see Ralph as a father figure towards Vanellope. He’s fiercely protective, and he’s struggling with letting her go. I think as parents we can relate to Ralph’s insecurities about our own children growing up.

PAYING THEIR DUES – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz venture into the expansive and thrilling world of the internet. In an effort to find a replacement part for Vanellope’s arcade game, Sugar Rush, Ralph and Vanellope successfully bid at eBay, only to learn they’ll actually have to pay for their purchase.
The Internet Isn’t Always a Nice Place to Be
There is a dark side of the internet. Ralph Breaks the Internet tackles the topic of “online bullying.” When Ralph is reading user comments from his videos on BuzzzTube, they’re not very nice. There’s a lot of negativity. He is called “stupid.” Although Ralph’s videos are going viral, is it really worth it at the price of those hurtful comments? It’s a great teaching point for our kids. This is real life. Things like this happen everyday. They’re happening right now. While this message went right over my 5 year old’s head, My 9 year old got it. He brought it up as soon as the movie was over.
The Villain
Who’s the villain in Ralph Breaks the Internet? Well, I’m not going to tell you, but I will tell you that you might be surprised. It’s also a bit creepy, so I could see some children being bothered by it. My two kids (ages 9 & 5) were absolutely fine, so I’d say it depends on your kids.

SELFIE! In Ralph Breaks the Internet, Vanellope von Schweetz hits the internet where she encounters and then befriends the Disney princesses. Filmmakers invited the original voice talent to return to the studio to help bring their characters to life.
The Princess Scene
We’ve all been waiting for this iconic scene ever since a clip was first released. Let me just come out and say it. The princess scene was my absolute FAVORITE part of the movie!! I mean, ALL of the Disney princess in one room — it doesn’t get much better than that! I love how they poke fun of their own movies, and they’re incredibly punny, but there’s even more to this scene. It showcases female empowerment.

THE RACE IS ON – When video-game bad guy Ralph and Vanellope head to the internet in search of a replacement part for her game, Sugar Rush, they find themselves in the middle of Slaughter Race, an online racing game set in an apocalyptic world that’s populated by first-person players and gaming characters. As a racer herself, Vanellope is immediately drawn to this fierce and fun crew of racers who, unlike in other racing games, are much more multidimensional than at first glance. Among the core team of game characters in Slaughter Race are Felony (voice of Ali Wong), Butcher Boy (voice of Timothy Simons), Shank (voice of Gal Gadot), Little Debbie (voice of Glozell Green) and Pyro (voice of Hamish Blake). “
New Characters
Ralph Breaks the Internet introduces a host of new and exciting characters who live inside of the internet. You will love Shank (I mean c’mon, she’s Wonder Woman). I also really enjoyed Yesss and would love to hire her for my blog! Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for loads of Easter Eggs, and there’s a very brief cameo of Stan Lee, which I thought paid a great tribute to him. Fix-It Felix and other characters from Wreck-It Ralph are in the sequel, but there’s not as much of a story line for them. This one is really about Ralph and Vanellope.

NUMBERS GAME – In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Ralph and Vanellope find themselves in need of making some serious cash in order to purchase a replacement steering wheel for her game, Sugar Rush. Fortunately, a Netizen named Yesss—the head algorithm of a trend-making website called BuzzzTube—has a plan. Yesss, who has her finger on the internet’s fast-paced pulse, helps make Ralph the next viral video sensation.

WORLD WIDE WOW! – Ralph and Vanellope’s friendship is challenged when they journey into the internet in search of a replacement part for her game. This vast new world is both incredibly exciting and overwhelming—depending on who you ask.
Friendship
Above all, Ralph Breaks the Internet is about friendship. It’s about letting your friend go to chase her dreams, even if you’re not ready to let her go. Just because you might not live in the same “world” as your friend, doesn’t mean you can no longer be friends. People change, and that’s okay!! People grow up. They better themselves. They chase their dreams! And as a friend, you need to be there to encourage and support them every step of the way!
Should you go see Ralph Breaks the Internet?
Bottom line. YES! Is it as good as Wreck-it Ralph? I don’t think so. But, I still think this sequel is fun and your whole family will enjoy it. You will laugh. A lot. You might cry. You will leave the theater feeling happy, and with some important conversation starters to have with your kids. Make sure you stay through to the end credits. Trust me!
