Practical Magic 2 Review: A Sequel That Gets It Right and Feels Like Coming Home

Some sequels feel like they were made simply because Hollywood knew audiences would show up. Practical Magic 2 feels different. This is a sequel that gets it right.

Nearly three decades after Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman first brought sisters Sally and Gillian Owens to life, the Owens women are back, and watching them together again feels like reconnecting with old friends. Practical Magic 2 is heartfelt, nostalgic, magical, and filled with the little moments that longtime fans will appreciate. It’s the kind of sequel that understands exactly why people fell in love with the original in the first place.

Practical Magic 2 Review

A Story Filled With Heart

At the center of Practical Magic 2 is a heartfelt story about family, love, sisterhood, and breaking the cycles that have followed the Owens women for generations. The story expands the Owens family and introduces the next generation while still keeping Sally and Gillian at the heart of the movie. The result is a story that feels like a continuation rather than a simple retread. There are emotional moments that give the story weight, but there’s also plenty of the warmth and magic that made the original such a beloved part of so many fans’ lives.

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman Are Still Magic Together

The biggest reason Practical Magic 2 works is simple: Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Seeing Bullock return as Sally and Kidman as Gillian is pure joy. Their chemistry hasn’t lost its spark, and watching the sisters slip back into their familiar dynamic is one of the film’s biggest highlights. There’s an ease to their performances that makes it feel as though no time has passed. Sally and Gillian have grown and changed, but their bond remains at the heart of the story.

The Nostalgia Is Strong

If you loved the original Practical Magic, prepare for the nostalgia. The sequel is packed with Easter eggs, familiar references, and plenty of callbacks to the first film that will have longtime fans smiling. These moments don’t simply exist to remind you that you’re watching Practical Magic again. They feel like little gifts for the audience that has kept the original alive all these years. The movie understands that nostalgia works best when it is woven naturally into the story.

It Feels Like Coming Home

That’s probably the best way I can describe watching Practical Magic 2. It feels like coming home.

It’s comforting returning to the Owens family, seeing Sally and Gillian together again, and stepping back into a world of magic, sisterhood, family traditions, and midnight margaritas. For fans who have revisited the original movie year after year, that familiarity carries a lot of emotional weight. The film doesn’t ask you to forget what came before. Instead, it embraces the history of these characters and builds on it.

A Sequel Made for the Fans

One of my favorite things about Practical Magic 2 is how clearly it understands its audience. This isn’t trying to replace the original. It’s celebrating it while giving the Owens family a new chapter. That’s what makes the sequel work. It gives longtime fans the nostalgia they came for while introducing a new generation to the magic of this world.

And seeing the story evolve across generations adds another emotional layer to the movie, making the themes of family and sisterhood feel even more meaningful.

Final Thoughts

Practical Magic 2 is the sequel fans have been waiting for. It’s heartfelt, nostalgic, magical, and filled with Easter eggs that reward those who have loved the original for years. Most importantly, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman prove that the magic between Sally and Gillian is still there.

For me, this is what a legacy sequel should be. It respects what came before while giving these beloved characters another story to tell. And sometimes, the best feeling a movie can give you is the feeling of coming home.

If you loved Practical Magic, grab your spell book, make yourself a midnight margarita, and go see this one. The Owens sisters are back, and the magic is still there.
