Peter Pan & Wendy introduces us to a familiar story, but delivers more depth that is relatable in today’s world. Wondering if this new Peter Pan live-action movie is kid-friendly? I’m breaking down all of the thematic elements, including its PG rating, in my Peter Pan & Wendy Parents Guide and Movie Review. Here’s what parents need to know to help YOU decide if it’s appropriate for kids. As always, no spoilers!
Peter Pan & Wendy Parents Guide + Review
Disney+ delivers its latest live-action reimagined film straight to its streaming service. This time, it’s Peter Pan’s turn. It’s no secret that the 1953 animated Disney classic has much controversy with its racial undertones. In fact, although the original Peter Pan its rated G, you cannot view it on a children’s profile on Disney+. There is also a disclaimer before the movie begins saying that indigenous people are portrayed in a stereotypical way including negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people and cultures. Peter Pan & Wendy tries to redeem itself with a very different message, and strong representation throughout the film.
The cast of Peter Pan & Wendy is certainly something to speak of. Jude Law stars as Captain Hook, and there are parts where he makes us feel emotion for his villainous character. We’re able to see a bit of Hook’s backstory, and his past trauma make his actions understood to a point. I’ve always said villains are misunderstood characters, and this very well could be true for Hook. There is always a reason WHY someone is the way they are.
There’s a major dose of female empowerment in Peter Pan & Wendy. Ever Anderson as Wendy Darling is portrayed as fearless and incredibly fierce. Yara Shahidi plays the ever spunky Tinkerbell, and Alyssa Wapanatâhk gives Tiger Lily an actual storyline and a strong connection to Wendy. Seeing these leading ladies onscreen in powerful roles is a major standout of the film.
Of course we have to mention our Peter Pan, played by Alexander Molony. The boy who never wants to grow up deals with some unprocessed feelings from years ago. The past relationship between Peter and Captain Hook is very complex, and certainly a highlight of the movie.
How does Neverland look in CGI?
One of my favorite scenes of Peter Pan & Wendy is when the children first fly through London. They go through the clocktower and enter Neverland, and for me, that whole scene is pure magic. However, Neverland itself seemed to lack color. I would have expected more vibrancy, but felt overall the visuals were dull.
Is Peter Pan & Wendy Kid-Friendly? Here’s Your Parents Guide:
Peter Pan & Wendy has an MPA rating of PG for violence, peril, and thematic elements. It has a runtime of 1 hour 47 minutes. There is no end credit scene in Peter Pan & Wendy. Here’s what parents need to know about Disney’s latest live-action movie.
Language
There is zero usage of profanity in Peter Pan & Wendy, which is a HUGE win for a PG film.
Violence
We all know the story of Peter Pan, and especially his relationship with Captain Hook. Expect to see sword fights, hand-to-hand combat fights, children being held captive, and talk of execution. Captain Hook also has a run-in with Tick Tock Croc in an attempt to fight off his crocodile nemesis.
Mature Content
The content in Peter Pan & Wendy will be mostly fine for all ages. There is some hand-holding and talk about what a kiss is. Of course one character loses his pants, which is typical in a kids film.
What is the Age Recommendation for Peter Pan & Wendy?
Based on this Peter Pan & Wendy Parents Guide, I would recommend this reimagined film for ages 5 and up. However, please take the above into consideration when choosing this movie for your family.
Overall Thoughts
Peter Pan & Wendy is a refreshing take on a timeless tale we’ve heard time and time again. Although there are very similar elements to the original, Peter Pan & Wendy is not a complete rehashing of the animated film. It might start off that way, but keep going. Trust me. There’s so much more.
Peter Pan & Wendy delivers a strong message that growing up is the greatest adventure of all. I think this is a great takeaway for all of us, especially parents. We’re often sad about our children growing up too quickly that we need to remember to stop and see how beautiful it is to watch them grow. Head second star to the right and straight on to morning and stream Peter Pan & Wendy on Disney+ today.
