Netflix’s FATHERHOOD Movie Review

Inspired by a true story, Netflix’s Fatherhood brings us on an emotional yet uplifting journey in this heartwarming film. Kevin Hart takes a break from his usual comedic roles and plays Matt Logelin, a newly widowed father who is determined to raise his newborn daughter, Maddy. 

Fatherhood Movie Review 

Fatherhood has an MPAA rating of PG-13 for strong language and some suggestive material. It has a runtime of 1 hour 49 minutes. This is NOT a movie for children. While there are funny moments in Fatherhood, the storyline is much too deep for little ones. There is also quite a bit of language. No profanity is used, but you will hear words like: sucks, a**, Sh*t, mother fudger, idiot, He**, a**hole, bonehead, butthead, and GILF (which was a new one for me). 

But while Fatherhood might not be best for kids, it is absolutely a must-watch. Kevin Hart gives the performance of his life in the role of Maddy’s father. 

Slight Spoiler Ahead

I usually don’t write any spoilers in my movie reviews, however, I think this one is an exception. If you do not want to read any spoilers, then come back to this post after you have watched the movie. However, I’m going to tell you how Matt’s wife, Liz, dies (it is no secret he’s a widow). Liz’s death could be triggering and upsetting for some people.

Because Maddy is breech, Liz needs to have a c-section. I had two c-sections myself, so I know they’re not exactly a walk in the park. However, when Liz goes to get up from her hospital bed for the first time, she collapses. She has trouble breathing, and Matt is pushed out of the room. Liz dies from a pulmonary embolism. 

Fatherhood is full of emotional moments

Watching Matt struggle through the emotions of losing his wife is heart wrenching. Kevin Hart does an incredible job with allowing you to truly feel his sadness. 

I love that Fatherhood takes the stereotype that men cannot raise children alone head-on. It seems that no one thinks Matt is capable of raising his daughter independently. And because no one has faith in him, not to mention that his mother in-law is condescending, Matt is even more determined to excel at caring for his little girl. You can’t help but root for his character, and you will fall in love with the daddy/daughter duo of Matt and Maddy. 

Overall Thoughts

Fatherhood hits you right in the gut as a parent. You can easily place yourself in Matt’s shoes, and feel those hard emotions. Fatherhood is raw, it’s heavy, and it’s deep. But underneath those emotions, it’s full of heart and inspirational. This is one movie you don’t want to miss. Fatherhood premieres on Netflix June 18, 2021.
