I’m breaking down all of the thematic elements, including its PG rating, in my Minions: The Rise of Gru Parents Guide and Movie Review. Here’s what parents need to know to help YOU decide if it’s appropriate for kids. As always, no spoilers!

Minions: The Rise of Gru Parents Guide + Movie Review
Minions: The Rise of Gru, is the second prequel movie in the Despicable Me franchise. This time rather than an influx of strictly Minion gibberish, we’re joined by Gru (Steve Carell) as a child. Carell’s character is what was missing from the first Minions movie. And while there isn’t any comparison to the Despicable Me trilogy, this prequel is much more solid.
Minions: The Rise of Gru is set during the groovy 1970’s, and they really pulled out the nostalgia. From peace signs, bell bottoms, disco music, and a side of chest hair, you’ll feel like you’re walking in that era.
Gru is 12 years old and has big dreams of becoming a super villain. His goal is to become a member of the Vicious 6, an elite group of famous villains. When a position opens up, he applies and is welcomed for an interview. Of course nothing ever goes as planned and this sets him up for his first big adventure.

The Visuals
Illumination has earned a reputation for its vibrant animation, and this rings true for Minions: The Rise of Gru. Expect lots of bright, crisp imagery, and some adorable sad puppy dog eyes. IYKYK. There’s a plethora of Easter Eggs from the Despicable Me movies, so keep your eyes peeled!

IS Minions: The Rise of Gru KID-FRIENDLY? HERE’S YOUR PARENTS GUIDE:
The Minions are well-known for their crude humor and silly shenanigans. Does Minions: The Rise of Gru dive too much into this territory, or is it okay for young children? Here’s what parents need to know before watching the new Minions movie with their kids.
Minions: The Rise of Gru has an MPAA rating of PG for some action/violence, and rude humor. It has a runtime of 1 hour 30 minutes — really the perfect duration for a kids film. Let’s break down the thematic elements and take a closer look.
Language
While there is no profanity in Minions: The Rise of Gru, you can expect to hear insulting words like: stupid, idiot, and shut up.
Violence
The Minions are known for causing complete mayhem, and they certainly live up to their reputation. From throwing spears, shooting guns, blasting cannons, hand to hand combat, and even arson, expect your usual type of Minion violence.
Mature Content
Butts, butts, and more butts. Not only do you get your usual farting and fart jokes, you will also be treated to some behind visuals. Both of your Minion friends, and once of Gru. There is also a Minion who puts tennis balls inside of his shirt for breasts. Of course my 8 year old thought this was hysterical and the best thing ever, but just a heads up.
Age Recommendation
Let’s face it. Kids LOVE the Minions. Although the content is lacking, that’s not to say your children won’t enjoy this film. Mine sure did. While I was scratching my head, they were rolling with laughter. I would recommend Minions: The Rise of Gru for all ages, which is something I usually don’t do…so that has to say a lot.

Overall Thoughts
Visually appealing and a cute story about those Minions we love so much and their mini boss, Gru. Kids will love seeing Gru as a child, and will be cheering him on to achieve his super villain dreams. Although I didn’t find the story totally engaging, there’s a great message to “find your tribe and never ever let them go.” That’s a message I can get behind. Minions: The Rise of Gru is a great film to enjoy with your kids. Watch their faces. You won’t be disappointed.

Minions: The Rise of Gru Synopsis
Long before he becomes the master of evil, Gru (Oscar® nominee Steve Carell) is just a 12-year-old boy in 1970s suburbia, plotting to take over the world from his basement. It’s not going particularly well. When Gru crosses paths with the Minions, including Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto—a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please—this unexpected family joins forces. Together, they build their first lair, design their first weapons, and strive to execute their first missions.
When the infamous supervillain supergroup, the Vicious 6, oust their leader—legendary martial arts fighter Wild Knuckles (Oscar® winner Alan Arkin)— Gru, their most devoted fanboy, interviews to become their newest member. The Vicious 6 is not impressed by the diminutive, wannabe villain, but then Gru outsmarts (and enrages) them, and he suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. With Gru on the run, the Minions attempt to master the art of kung fu to help save him, and Gru discovers that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.
