Remember that time I was invited by Disney Studios to walk the red carpet and attend the Frozen 2 Premiere? Yes. It STILL feels like a dream! A few days later, I was invited to the Frozen 2 global press conference, where we would have the opportunity to interview the talent of Disney’s latest film sensation. I was REALLY excited about my question. I was even more excited when the press junket moderator, Lola Ogunnaike, called on me. My question played out differently than I intended, but that made it all the more memorable! What started with me complimenting Josh Gad for his character Olaf, turned into me making him melt! Now it was time for my REAL actual question, and it was for Kristen Bell, who plays Anna in Frozen 2.
I’d like to think of Kristen Bell as one of the most genuine, REAL actors in Hollywood. She just seems super sweet…like you could just grab a cup of coffee with her and chat.
And now, here I was. Microphone in hand. Literally feet away from Kristen. About to ask her a very important question.
SPOILER WARNING: If you have NOT seen Disney’s Frozen 2, I suggest you bookmark this page and come back to read afterwards, as the rest of this post contains major spoilers.
What was Kristen Bell’s initial reaction to the fate of Anna in Frozen 2?
With a deep breath, I went for it.
Me: “Kristen. The ending was very pivotal for your character. What was your initial reaction when you found out the fate of Anna?
Kristen: “Yes, it was very pivotal. And I remember the moment that I found out that that scene was written and I, I couldn’t believe it, and yet it felt exactly right. And the reason and the way that it felt right was so perfect because if we had written it where Anna wanted to be Queen, it would not have worked. That’s not Anna. Because Anna the whole movie is working on her codependency. She doesn’t know what to do when she’s alone, and I know that feeling very well. It’s really easy to live for other people. And then when you’re alone in a house, you’re like, What do I do? Like literally what do I do?”
Kristen goes on to say…
“But the fact that they wrote it, as Elsa’s idea was this beautiful gift that just matched Anna’s belief and drive in saying Elsa, your ideas are crazy and weird and also I’m going to stand right next to you while you try to accomplish them. This ultimate belief in people and also this like slightly maternal thing that older sisters have, the way that it was written when there’s a moment right before that scene when Elsa says like and making it right and I know exactly that or I know what to do. It just filled me with so much joy because it’s what you do to a codependent person when you have to encourage them.”
Kristen Bell’s response to the fate of Anna was so eloquent and perfectly fitting. Kristen is truly the real life version of Anna. I wish you could have seen the interaction between her and Idina Menzel during the Frozen 2 press conference. It’s truly like they’re sisters.
There’s a quote from Elsa towards the end of Frozen 2 where she says, “I have promised to always do what’s best for Arendelle. Thankfully, I know just what that is. It’s a very powerful and pivotal quote in the movie.
What’s best for Arendelle is for Anna to be Queen.
Director Jennifer Lee dived into my question even more…
Jennifer Lee: “There’s also something the moment for big sister little sister where your big sister sees you as the whole person and the potential that the little sister has risen up to a place of like I see your power. Anna’s a leader and she’s the best kind of leader because she’s so nurturing and giving. She’s the one who lifts people up and that’s the best kind of leader. Kristin brought that to Anna and it’s been in Anna from the very beginning. She just didn’t know it. She was growing and learning.”
Olaf says it best when he says, “I still don’t know what transformation is. But I feel like this forest has changed us all.”
Every single one of the characters in Frozen 2 goes through a transformation. For our two favorite sisters, it is beautiful and life changing. Anna is Queen, and Elsa is FREE!!
As if that wasn’t enough excitement, after the press junket ended you’ll never guess what happened…I ran into Kristen Bell in the bathroom!
SERIOUSLY. I opened the door, and Kristen Bell was like, “HEYYYY!” Nope. Not even joking. She ran over to me and said I had the BEST question! She also loved what I pulled on Josh Gad. LOL.
I really should have asked her for a selfie, as I’m sure she would have been like, “ABSOLUTELY!” But it honestly didn’t even cross my mind! I was literally just so in the moment.
You know what’s funny? I NEVER intended for that moment with Josh Gad to play out the way it did. I really just wanted to compliment him as his character, Olaf, because he seriously stole the show in Frozen 2!
HOWEVER, the whole thing could not have worked out more perfectly. It’s a moment I will forever treasure. Not only did I make Olaf melt, but I also addressed Kristen Bell with a very important question about the evolution of Anna.
About Frozen 2
Why was Elsa born with magical powers? The answer is calling her and threatening her kingdom. Together with Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, she’ll set out on a dangerous but remarkable journey. In “Frozen,” Elsa feared her powers were too much for the world. In “Frozen 2,” she must hope they are enough. From the Academy Award®- winning team—directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, producer Peter Del Vecho and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—and featuring the voices of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad.
