Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2 broke records for best movie opening. This sequel was 14 years in the making, and obviously greatly anticipated. Movie-goers are claiming this the best Pixar sequel EVER! While you might assume so, is Incredibles 2 kid friendly? I took my two children (ages 4 & 8) opening weekend. I’m going to break it down for you in this Incredibles 2 Parent Review. No spoilers!!
INCREDIBLES 2 PARENT REVIEW | KID FRIENDLY? #INCREDIBLES2
Everyone’s favorite superhero family is back in this smashing sequel! Incredibles 2 picks up exactly where its original left off with The Parr family taking on the Underminer. This opening scene sets the plot for the rest of the movie, and although at almost 2 hours running time, there is no down time in this sequel. You’ll be on the edge of your seat!
INCREDIBLES 2 Synopsis
Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in “Incredibles 2” – but this time Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is in the spotlight, leaving Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell) and Dash (voice of Huck Milner) to navigate the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life. It’s a tough transition for everyone, made tougher by the fact that the family is still unaware of baby Jack-Jack’s emerging superpowers. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) must find a way to work together again—which is easier said than done, even when they’re all Incredible.
MY THOUGHTS
I think it was a brave, yet smart move to start Incredibles 2 right where the original left off. We don’t have to wonder what The Parr family has been up to these past 14 years, since no time has passed.
I love, love, LOVE that Elastigirl was center stage. It was her turn to save her family. I think this was an important theme to incorporate with today’s society. Moms can do it too!
Of course with Elastigirl off saving the world, that meant Mr. Incredible was suddenly a stay-at-home dad. I greatly applaud the reverse gender roles. It’s important for kids to see moms work AND dads take care of their kids.
INCREDIBLES 2 SHOWS THE REAL SIDE OF PARENTING
While yes, the scenes with Mr. Incredible at home with the kids are hilarious for sure, they are also real life! He tackles some real issues — teen angst, a baby with 17 super powers, COMMON CORE MATH. Need I say more?! Edna Mode wins the best quote of the movie when she says, “When done properly, parenting is a heroic act.” YES!!
PG RATING | IS INCREDIBLES 2 KID FRIENDLY?
Let’s talk about that PG rating. In today’s day in age, it seems like G rated movies are few and far between. Why is that? I think as a society we expect more. More action. More violence. But is that all worth it at the expense of the innocence of our children?
Incredibles 2 is rated PG for mild language, and some really intense, scary scenes. There is one scene in particular with Elastigirl and the Screenslaver (new villain), that frightened my 4 year old. If you were to ask him about the movie, while he will say he enjoyed it, he will also tell you he “cried a little bit, and it was too loud.”
I will say that I appreciated how the Screenslaver could be a reference to the thought that “too much screen time isn’t good for anyone.” It literally brainwashed people. I’m not sure if that was Pixar’s intent…but I found it very relateable for kids today.
THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY
Ultimately the theme of Incredibles 2 is “family.” We will do everything in our power to protect our family. Whether it’s saving the world to make it a better place for our kids, learning how to control our baby’s super powers, helping our teen deal with their first crush, or understanding their math homework, we do it all for them. For that, I applaud Disney Pixar.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Incredibles 2. It was…simply put, INCREDIBLE. My 8 year old was literally on the edge of his seat, completely engaged the entire film. He wants to see it again to look for the Easter Eggs! While my 4 year old did enjoy it, that one scene was a little too much for him. He is very sensitive to loud noises and does scare easily. If he didn’t have an older brother, I might have held out on this one for a bit with him.

This movie looks so cute!!
I agree with most of it. Although I would add that Disney should reconsider to watch for any scenes that might not be suitable for some conditions. I consider the scene of Elatigirl and Screensaver to be too intense for kids or adults suffering from epilepsy. For me it was a shock that they have missed that.
