IF delivers so much more than might first meet the eye. John Krasinski created something truly charming and filled with so much heart. IF is a love letter to the pure magic of childhood, and a reminder to never lose sight of your imagination.

IF Movie Review
John Krasinski proves himself to be a directorial force to be reckoned with, expertly crafting a film that keeps audiences filled with a multitude of emotions in his latest film, IF. From the brilliant casting to the visual effects, whimsical landscapes, and creative characters, IF envelopes us into a relatable story we need to believe.

IF opens with introducing us Bea (Cailey Fleming), a 12 year old girl who recently lost her mother to cancer. Bea’s father (John Krasinski) is now in the hospital awaiting a surgery for an undisclosed illness. Throughout this time, Bea is living with her grandmother (Fiona Shaw). It is very clear that Bea has been through a lot in her short 12 years of life, and the gut punches don’t seem to quit — first her mother, now her father. Because of these traumatic events, Bea has been forced to grow up rather quickly. She has lost that pure innocence of childhood early in life, and she knows that sometimes bad things happen. Despite all of the grief and pain their family has endured, Bea’s father continuously reminds her to “be a kid.”

Eventually, Bea’s curiosity leads her to open her mind into something beyond her imagination, where she’s introduced to an array of displaced IFs (imaginary friends). The IFs are led by Cal (Ryan Reynolds), who is in charge of finding them a new person. These IFs have been without their person since they’ve grown up and no longer believe. Bea is drawn to these IFs, especially Blue (Steve Carell), a big purple, hilariously awkward IF, and decides assist Cal in his placement search.

While you might be thinking IF is a kids movie, I’m going to say it is really a film for all of us. But, I feel adults and teens will grasp its meaning and appreciate the film on a whole different level. In fact, my 14 year old enjoyed the movie much more than my 10 year old.
While IF is fun and silly, there’s a deeper message of having someone there for you, always. It dives into the power of imagination and how our memories live within us forever. If you’ve experienced loss and grief and feel like one thing keeps knocking you down before you can get back up again, IF is the type of movie that will stay in your heart. It will literally pull those memories from you while you’re watching the film. Personally, I can say IF is a cathartic movie-going experience. It’s unlike any other movie I’ve ever seen. Krasinski created a story that is going to stick with you.
IF is filled with magic, charm, and embodies so much heart. Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming are the perfect pair and beyond brilliant onscreen. IF reminds us to cherish the magic of our childhood in our memories that live on forever.
IF has an MPA rating of PG for thematic elements and mild language. It has a runtime of 1 hour 44 minutes.
