Well, I got my period yesterday morning – Boooo! Looks like we’ll be putting TTC on hold until after my thyroidectomy. I am going to call the surgeon’s office tomorrow morning and see if they can call me if they get any openings before February 12th for a consult…I just want to get this thing over with. I’ve been doing some heavy research with my friend google, and supposedly only 20% of “suspicious” nodules removed end up being cancer. I keep telling myself that even if it is cancer it is 100% curable…but I still don’t like that word! Anyways, while I was doing research with my new BFF google, I did read that if the nodule is not cancer then you do not have to take the radioactive iodine pill. The way my endocrinologist was talking the other day, it sounded like I would take the pill regardless. However, if I take the pill it’s advised to wait 6 months to TTC. When I meet with the surgeon I need to discuss this with him. I don’t know if having the internet at my hands so easily for research is a good thing or not….you are able to find so much information and your brain starts thinking all sorts of things that I suppose you wouldn’t even be thinking of. But, obviously I can’t stop myself from researching like crazy! Ugh!

Sweetie, I'm sorry your biopsy came back with the scary CA word. I know how shocking it is. The good news is that papillary thyroid CA (that's the one I had) is the most common & successfully treated type of thyroid CA. It still sucks to have it but, it's the one to get if you have to, I suppose.
The surgery isn't too bad. I only spent one night in the hospital. I was in pain that first night, but the morphine helped take that away. I was really surprised at how quickly the pain got better. I had a harder time tolerating the pain meds than anything. They made me really nauseous, so I went off them 2 days after surgery & switched to Advil. See if the hopital can send you home with a Rx for an anti-nausea drug (unless you know you can tolerate pain meds).
You will probably have to take lots of calcium after surgery because it takes your parathyroid glands awhile to start functioning after the shock of surgery. Buy a bottle or two of Extra Strength Tums (or Viactive chews) ahead of time as a calcium supplement. Then, you won't have to worry about sending someone out to buy them after surgery. You will need quite a bit. I was taking 2-3 Tums every hour. Also, all that calcium made me really constipated, so I would buy a stool softener (i.e. Colace) and start taking one or two a day right after surgery.
It took me just over a week to start feeling back to 100%. I will be 2 weeks post-op tomorrow & I feel great. My incision looks awesome & the scabs are starting to come off. The scar underneath is really minimal. I'm very impressed with how well it's healing.
I hope you don't need the RAI, but if you do, it will be okay. My endo. also said to wait one year, but then the literature he gave me said 6 months. From everything I've read, six months seems more than adequate to me.
I'd write more, but this is already the longest comment in the histroy of the blogosphere ๐ You can email me anytime if you have any questions or need support at arb2@hotmail.com ((BIG HUGS))
