Inspired by a true story, Netflix’s Home Team is more than a bunch of laughs. The movie holds it own bringing heartwarming moments on the screen. Is Home Team kid-friendly? What ages is it best suited for? I’m breaking down all of the thematic elements, including its PG rating, in my Home Team Parents Guide and Movie Review. Here’s what parents need to know to help YOU decide if it’s appropriate for kids. As always, no spoilers!
Home Team Parents Guide + Movie Review
Kevin James portrays New Orleans Saints head coach, Sean Payton, in Netflix’s Home Team. As a former Pop Warner football cheerleader and coach, I was really excited for this movie. The film is inspired by the true story of Payton’s 2012 season suspension due to the ‘bountygate’ scandal.
During Payton’s year off, he coaches his son’s youth football team. Touted as a sports comedy, Home Team surprisingly brings more heart than laughs. Don’t get me wrong…there are certainly laugh-out-loud moments. The film is produced by Happy Madison Productions, so you wouldn’t expect anything less. But it’s the scenes where Payton is trying to reconnect with his son and coaching his teammates that will win you over.
Is Home Team Kid-Friendly? Here’s Your Parents Guide:
When I first watched the trailer for Home Team, it reminded me of the movie, Little Giants. Remember that flick from the 90’s starring Rick Moranis and Ed O’Neill? Does Home Team have that same family-friendly vibe? What ages is it best suited for? Here’s what parents need to know before watching Home Team with their children.
Netflix’s Home Team hits the streaming service on January 28th. Home Team has an MPAA rating of PG for crude material, language, and some suggestive material. It has the perfect runtime of 1 hour 35 minutes. Let’s break down the thematic elements and take a closer look.
Violence
There aren’t really any violent themes in Home Team. There is certainly tackling throughout the football games, but nothing too crazy.
Language
For a PG rating, Home Team surprised me with the amount of unnecessary language for a family film. Sucks, stupid, @sshole, punk @ss, d@mn, wussy, and dummy, are all words you can expect to hear. This did disappoint me, because it was just too much — especially for a PG film.
Mature Content
The overall theme of Sean Payton’s suspension might stir some questions from the younger audience members. However, this is not really what the movie is about. Home Team is much more focused on Payton’s relationship with his son, and coaching the group of kids.
With that being said, the assistant coach of the youth football team (Gary Valentine), clearly has a drinking problem. He rides a bike because of rumors he lost his license. Of course it’s meant to be funny, however, in a PG film, drinking shouldn’t necessarily be portrayed this way.
There is also a projectile vomiting scene, which is shown in the trailer. It might make those with sensitive stomachs squeamish, as it is quite graphic.
Age Recommendation
I watched Home Team with my children (ages 8 and 12), husband, and parents. We really had the whole multi-generational thing going on. What I enjoyed most about Home Team, was this movie had something for everyone. It really is a feel good film the whole family can appreciate together. Although my 8 year old son did watch it, I would recommend Home Team for ages 10 and up. He got a little bored with it, whereas my 12 year old loved every second.
Overall Thoughts
Home Team is more than your typical sports comedy. It’s uplifting, inspirational, and has heart. You’ll be cheering right along with the Warriors Pop Warner football team, and rooting for Sean Payton’s character. My only complaint is the language. It was just not needed, especially in a family film. Home Team hits Netflix January 28th!
