HAUNTED MANSION Parents Guide + Movie Review
To say I’ve been looking forward for Disney’s Haunted Mansion movie, would be a huge understatement. The iconic ride at Disney Parks is one of my most favorite attractions. It’s one I must experience every visit, and although I visit the parks multiple times per year, I never grow tired of it. I knew the movie would be either really entertaining, or a huge disappointment. And as a huge Haunted Mansion fan, boy did they deliver!
The story focuses on Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her son, Travis (Chase Dillon) who recently relocated to Gracey Manor for a fresh start. Upon arriving, they discover there is more than meets the eye to this spooky house.
The mother/son duo are soon joined by co-habitants Father Kent (Owen Wilson), paranormal tour guide Ben Matthias (LaKeith Stanfield), medium Harriet (Tiffany Haddish), and historian Bruce Davis (Danny DeVito). They learn that 999 ghosts occupy the mansion, and they’re looking for one more.
Is Haunted Mansion Kid-Friendly? Here’s Your Parents Guide:
Disney’s Haunted Mansion has an MPA rating of PG-13 for some thematic elements and scary action. It has a runtime of 2 hours 2 minutes. Here’s what parents need to know before seeing Haunted Mansion with your kids.
Language: The language is fairly tame in Haunted Mansion. I caught the words “damn” and “pissed” used.
Violence: There are jump scars a-plenty in Haunted Mansion. However, I feel that if you’re familiar with the Disney attraction, they’re not terrible. My 9 year old very much enjoyed the movie. There are some scary images of ghosts, and some aren’t all that friendly. Attempted murder is shown on multiple occasions with various weapons.
Mature Content: Grief plays a major theme in Disney’s Haunted Mansion. Death is always a heavy topic, but it’s important to note that this movie is very much death and dying. Drinking alcohol is also shown. Topics of exorcism and having a seance are discussed.
What is the Age Recommendation for Disney’s Haunted Mansion Movie?
Taking the above into consideration, I would recommend Haunted Mansion for ages 10 and up. However, your child must be okay with some dark themes, and jump scares. It’s a great first spooky movie for kids, just make sure they’re ready.
Is there an End-Credits Scene in Haunted Mansion?
Unfortunately, this is no post credit scene in Haunted Mansion. There is no need to stick around.
Disney’s Haunted Mansion takes everything you love about the ride and brings it to life. Although the movie is a huge Easter egg, Haunted Mansion delivers a compelling backstory of the beloved attraction. Overall, it’s a grim grinning good time.
