Disenchanted unravels everything you thought you knew about happily ever after. This isn’t your typical fairytale movie. Wondering if Disenchanted is kid-friendly? I’m breaking down all of the thematic elements, including its PG rating, in my Disenchanted Parents Guide and Movie Review. Here’s what parents need to know to help YOU decide if it’s appropriate for kids. As always, no spoilers!
Disenchanted Parents Guide + Movie Review
Disney Studios’ Disenchanted takes place 15 years after Giselle (Amy Adams) and Robert’s (Patrick Dempsey) happily ever after in Enchanted. The opening scene gives us a quick recap of the previous film, so it is not necessary to see the original first. However, I would absolutely encourage you to watch Enchanted, because it’s really good!
Although Giselle and Robert have been living in the kingdom of New York City, they decide to uproot their family to the suburban town of Monroeville. Giselle is hoping this change will allow her family to live a more “fairy tale life.” She often wonders what it would be to raise her family in Andalasia, and she’s hopeful this move will provide a balance between both worlds.
Unfortunately, things don’t go according to plan for Giselle, and she finds herself more out of place than ever. This misfortune causes her to accidentally cast a spell that magically transforms Monroeville into Monrolasia, a real life fairy tale world. The town isn’t the only thing that has changed, as Giselle is turning into her worst nightmare…an evil stepmother! Giselle is in a race against time, and herself, reverse the spell and save everyone she loves.
The Cast
It’s been a LONG time, and it’s delightful to see Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey together again. Amy Adams truly has that Disney princess voice, and she can certainly sing! Disenchanted gives us something Enchanted didn’t provide, Patrick Dempsey singing! And let me tell you, we are here for it!!
Amy Adams delivers and incredible performance, bouncing back and forth between good and evil…quite literally! It’s amazing how she can be so sincere and innocent one second, only to snap into wickedness the next.
Maya Rudolph portrays villain, Malvina, flawlessly. James Marsden brings the laughs. I wish his character had more screen time because he’s freaking hilarious. Idina Menzel steals the show with her incredible performance of “Love Power.” It’s been 3 years since Frozen 2, and it’s an exceptional delight to hear her sing again.
Endless Easter Eggs
If you enjoy hunting for Easter eggs, you’re in luck. Disenchanted is filled to the brim with endless Disney Easter eggs that never stop coming! I’m sure each time you watch this movie, you’ll notice a new one…there’s that many! There are also scenes within Disenchanted that will remind you of other Disney fairy tales. It’s such a fun watch and you’ll be smiling from ear to ear.
Is Disenchanted Kid-Friendly? Here’s your Parents Guide:
Disenchanted is premiering straight to Disney+‘s streaming service on November 18, 2022. With a tagline like, “Happily Never After,” you might be wondering if Disenchanted is too scary for kids. Here’s what parents need to know before watching the Enchanted sequel with your kids.
Disenchanted has an MPAA rating of PG for mild peril and language. It has a runtime of 1 hour 58 minutes. PG movies sometimes walk a fine line between kid-friendly and not. Let’s break down the thematic elements and take a closer look.
Violence
Disenchanted has scenes of characters in peril. There are swords used and fire. Magic is used, and sometimes it’s evil magic. Overall think more on terms of “fantasy peril.”
Language
I did count one use of H E double hockey sticks in Disenchanted. Putting that aside, I was very pleased with the lack of inappropriate language used in the film.
Mature Content
The theme of the wicked stepmother comes into play. Think similar of Cinderella, and that character is treated as such by the stepmother. There’s also the good vs. evil storyline.
Age Recommendation
Disenchanted is truly great for all ages. There’s enough singing in this musical where it’s not overdone and the songs come at the right moments. While I don’t see really little ones enjoying this movie, I’d recommend it for ages 6 and up. Watch Enchanted first and make for an extra long family movie night!
Overall Thoughts
Disenchanted is charming and bursting with magic. Filled with unexpected twists and turns you won’t see coming. I think everyone will be able to relate to Giselle’s character wishing for that perfect storybook life. While there’s nothing wrong with believing in fairytales, it’s important to not let it consume our actual reality. We cannot magically make everything picture perfect, and that’s okay. Memories shape us to who we are and they enable us to recognize the power of love. Sometimes, happily ever after might look different than we envision. And that makes it all the more magical.
Disenchanted Synopsis
An all-new live-action musical comedy, “Disenchanted” is a sequel to Disney’s box office hit “Enchanted” featuring the original cast from the heart-warming story of the lovable maiden from the fairy tale world of Andalasia who finally found her Prince Charming in the kingdom of New York City.
It has been 15 years since Giselle (Amy Adams) and Robert (Patrick Dempsey) wed, but Giselle has grown disillusioned with life in the city, so they move their growing family to the sleepy suburban community of Monroeville in search of a more fairy tale life. Unfortunately, it isn’t the quick fix she had hoped for. Suburbia has a whole new set of rules and a local queen bee, Malvina Monroe (Maya Rudolph), who makes Giselle feel more out of place than ever.
Frustrated that her happily ever after hasn’t been so easy to find, she turns to the magic of Andalasia for help, accidentally transforming the entire town into a real-life fairy tale and placing her family’s future happiness in jeopardy. Now, Giselle is in a race against time to reverse the spell and determine what happily ever aftertruly means to her and her family.
I HOPE YOU FOUND THIS DISENCHANTED PARENTS GUIDE AND MOVIE REVIEW HELPFUL FOR YOUR FAMILY. WILL YOU BE WATCHING?!
