Here’s what parents need to know to help YOU decide if it’s appropriate for kids. As always, no spoilers!

BETTER NATE THAN EVER Parents Guide + Review
Better Nate Than Ever is a Disney Plus original movie that really took me by surprise — in the best way possible. Musicals, for me personally, are always a hit or miss. I love them or hate them. Better Nate Than Ever completely blew me away, mainly because of the film’s leading actor, Rueby Wood. This is Rueby’s first onscreen role, and he performs flawlessly.

Better Nate Than Ever follows the story of 13 year old Nate Foster who has big dreams to be a star on Broadway. When his best friend Libby (Aria Brooks) discovers an audition in New York City for Lilo & Stitch the Musical, the two sneak off on an adventure to the city! Along the way, they meet up with Nate’s estranged Aunt Heidi (Lisa Kudro). She has a theater background and Nate absolutely idolizes his her. They have an instant connection and can truly relate to one another. Aunt Heidi can see her younger self in Nate, and the two of them form an inseparable bond.

The entire cast is incredible. Nate and Libby have a friendship that we should all wish to have. As a mom of two boys, I enjoyed seeing a story centered around brothers. Nate’s brother, Anthony (Joshua Bassett) couldn’t be more opposite. Anthony has never understood Nate and thought he was a bit weird. Watching their relationship develop led to some very emotional moments.

IS BETTER NATE THAN EVER KID-FRIENDLY? HERE’S YOUR PARENTS GUIDE:
Better Nate Than Ever has an MPAA rating of PG. This means that parental guidance is suggested. In this case, Better Nate Than Ever is rated PG for thematic elements, a suggestive reference, and mild language. It has a runtime of 1 hour 31 minutes. The time duration flows perfectly and the movie never seems to drag.
Overall, Better Nate Than Ever is film for all ages. However, there are a few things parents might appreciate a heads up on. There is some bullying and insulting words used like “loser.” There are also some punches thrown. The “suggestive reference” that is made is when one character refers to having a “pornographic memory.” It’s clearly put there to get a chuckle from the adults, and will most likely go over the little one’s heads. BUT, it could have easily been omitted.
I would recommend Better Nate Than Ever for ages 8 and up. There are a lot of laugh-out-loud moments that kids will enjoy, and you cannot forget the catchy tunes! This is one soundtrack they’ll be asking for on repeat!

Overall Thoughts
Better Nate Than Ever is a love letter to Broadway. Rueby Wood is literally the star of the show and shines in his on screen debut. I cannot wait to see where he goes next! Better Nate Than Ever is an uplifting and memorable film that will encourage you to chase your dreams and to always believe in yourself. Get ready for laughs, tears, and to be inspired. Better Nate Than Ever premieres on Disney+ April 1, 2022.
