And the results are in…

I just got back from my follow-up appointment with the surgeon. My pathology report results were in, and I did indeed have thyroid cancer. The good news is that it did not spread to my lymph nodes…that is something worth celebrating! The cure rate for thyroid cancer is 99%…which is huge! When they say “things happen for a reason,” they really weren’t kidding! Had I not gotten pregnant in December, my nodule wouldn’t have been discovered until who knows when..which would mean, I’d still be walking around with cancer today. Now, that cancer is out of my body! I will have to do the radioactive iodine treatment (RAI) but that should be a piece of cake. I will just go into my doctors office, swallow a pill, go home and be radioactive for a few days. My endo said I’d have to wait a year to get pregnant after I take the RAI, however, everything I’ve read online says 4-6 months, which seems much more doable. I have my next appointment with my endo on March 19th. I will hopefully set up a date for my RAI treatment then, and then discuss the pregnancy issue. He did originally tell me that I could get pregnant first, have the baby, and then do the RAI….but, I think it would be in my best interest to just get the RAI done and over with. That will be when I can officially move on from this crazy adventure life has thrown at us. While it sucks to know that I had thyroid cancer, I think I am finally able to be at ease knowing that I kicked it’s ass and I’m on my way to live a healthy LONG life!

Oh Kami, I am so glad to hear that it went well and hadn’t spread. Everything does happen for a reason so I’m happy that it worked out that way for you!

Wow, it’s crazy how life has a way of sending you signs. I’m so glad that the nodule was discovered and that you made the choice to have your thyroid removed. Great decision! I’m also relieved for you that the cancer hadn’t spread.

It’s crazy how things work out how they need to, isn’t it? I feel the same way about my thyroid cancer.

I’m sorry it was cancer, I had hoped it wouldn’t be. As you know, the RAI is no big deal. Feel free to email me any questions as they come up. My endo said to wait a year to get PG as well, but my RE approved my for our scheduled June cycle, so I will only be waiting about 4-5 months. I think the endo’s just don’t want any liability whatsoever in the situation. Do you have an RE you could ask?

Do you mind pointing me to where you found the 4-6 month waiting recommendation online? We’ll still cycle in June, I’m just interested in reading it.

Thinking of you and hope you are wll on the road to recovery!

P.S. Since my cancer (like yours) was caught early and hadn’t spread beyond my thyroid, I was able to get a lower dose of the RAI, so that also eased my mind about getting PG sooner.

Kami, I’m very glad to hear that it did not spread and that there’s is an incredibly high success rate. I’m glad that you are being so optimistic about it too! Good luck with the RAI and I hope that you are able to TTC soon!

I am so sorry it turned out this way for you. I was praying that you would be able to avoid it. I am glad it was contained though.

I too have read 4-6 months to try again. I’ll have to check with my endo next time we see her.

I was geared up for the RAI when the Gestational Trophoblastic diagnosis popped up.

At any rate, know I’m thinking about you. Big hugs
