Are you living with a disability and wondering how you can achieve financial peace-of-mind? Learn how ® helps people with disabilities save for their future. This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of ABLEnow. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
It’s not something I write about often, but something I should. I was born with a physical disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). OI is a genetic bone disorder characterized by fragile bones that break easily. This literally means that that my bones were imperfectly made from the beginning of my life. While there are several “types” of OI, I am classified as Type I, which is the mildest and most common form.
Growing up I sustained 15 major bone breaks and had two surgeries. Despite my bones being more fragile, I have always considered having OI one of my strongest qualities. I’ve never let my disability get me down, or deter me from anything I wished to accomplish. In fact, I was a cheerleader for 7 years, and then went on to coach for an additional two years. I did all of this from using a wheelchair as a safety precaution to protect my bones.
I obtained my driver’s license, went to college and earned my degree, got married, and started a family. Aside from my disability…my life was just like anyone else’s!
When I was a kid, I didn’t have to worry about financial stability. Now that I’m a mom of two precious boys, it’s my turn to provide my family with security.
Honestly, with having a disability like OI, I never know when I might fracture. That is something I have no control over. What I do have control over is how I can live my best life while maintaining financial independence. I want to give my kids THEIR very best childhood. Unknown medical expenses are the last thing I want to worry about.
