A Wrinkle in Time | Why our Kids Need this Movie #WrinkleInTime
I remember reading Madeleine L’Engle’s 1962 timeless classic in elementary school. While I do remember reading, and loving the book, I don’t remember much of the story line. It’s been many, many years. Originally I intended on reading the book before seeing the movie. However, after reading a few reviews of the live-action film myself, I opted against it. I wanted to go into the story with an open mind — and I’m really happy that I made that decision. Because of my open mind, I am able to tell you why A Wrinkle in Time is the movie our kids need.

STORY SYNOPSIS
From visionary director Ava DuVernay comes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s transformative journey led by three celestial guides, we discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light.
I took my 8-year old son, Lincoln with me to see this movie. At this years Disney Social Media Moms Celebration, I had viewed a 10 minute sneak peek, and was blown away. Lincoln is really into live-action and adventure films, and I just knew this would be a huge hit with him.
Lincoln wanted his photo taken with the poster of the movie, so I took a few shots. Afterwards, woman came up to us to ask if we were going to see the movie. She proudly told us her Godchild, Jennifer Lee, was one of the writers. We live in little Rhode Island, so that was pretty cool!! (as my son said)
MY THOUGHTS
The film itself was visually stunning. The tessering from earth to the other planets was beautifully done, and the use of CGI technology was spectacular.
I am glad I decided not to reread the book first, because I have heard the film is more so “based-on” the original classic, and not entirely a retelling. Of course now that I have seen the movie, I plan on reading the book together with Lincoln.
I found the story incredibly engaging. In fact, if there was anything I was disappointed in, it would be that the movie was too short! I think it could have easily been 30 minutes longer. I left wanting more!
Oprah Winfrey is Mrs. Which, Reese Witherspoon is Mrs. Whatsit and Mindy Kaling is Mrs. Who in Disney’s A WRINKLE IN TIME.
THE MRS.
Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling were made to play these characters. For starters, Mrs. Which (Oprah), was seriously OPRAH! I really can’t think of a better word to describe Mrs. Which. She is literally larger than life, and ever so wise. Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), is quirky and fun. She says exactly what’s on her mind, and is habitually happy. Mrs. Who is mystifying and spiritual. She speaks in quotations, which are often significant messages.
IMPORTANT MESSAGES IN A WRINKLE IN TIME
There are SO many important messages in A Wrinkle in Time. I think this movie is so incredibly important for our children. It addresses many points and learning messages. Bullying. Fear. Abuse. Diversity. Strong female characters. Discovering our faults and embracing them. Learning to trust. Loss. Being true to ourselves. I really feel that today’s generation of children, will really embrace this film. There are so many topics we can talk about with our kids. Many, many teaching moments.
Of course I asked my son Lincoln what he thought was the most important message of the film. He said Mrs. Whatsit’s gift. Mrs. Whatit told Meg to use the knowledge of her faults. Ultimately, this gift is what saved Charles Wallace from “The IT.” Meg had to embrace her faults. She discovered her faults are what makes her unique and special. Meg used her faults to be her very best self.
This is why our kids need this movie.

SHOULD YOUR KIDS SEE A WRINKLE IN TIME?
Now that I’ve told you why your kids need to see this movie, I’m going to tell you if they should. A Wrinkle in Time is rated PG. There are some extremely dark moments in this movie — especially in relation to “The IT” with Charles Wallace. I can see younger children being frightened, and I chose to not take my 4-year old to this movie. However, my more mature 8-year old loved it. I honestly don’t know if Lincoln would have been ready for this film at 7-years old. I think as a parent, you know your child best — however, I think for your child to really understand the messages in this movie, ages 8 and up would be best.

I want to see this movie, it looks really good! I am 46 and didn’t start being true to myself until I turned 40, so I think adults could benefit from this movie also.
I read this book so long ago but can’t wait to take my sisters to see it this weekend! I’m super excited about the cast too!
I have taught this book and read the series over the years. It will be nice to see how it plays out in screen. I am happy it is a good one for kids and hope it inspires them to read the series.
I have heard nothing but good things about this movie. My littles are just a bit young for it but in a few years we’ll read the book and have an at home viewing.
We still havent seen it. I have also never read it. If it is PG, I am not so sure, except to read it and find out. I also have to admit not being an Oprah fan (yes you can gasp) I just dont car for her acting with an exception or two.
