Summer Safety Tips for Kids

This post was sponsored by Floating Hospital for Children as part of an Influencer Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

Summer is calling! I can hardly believe the season of sunshine and fun is almost here! Summer is what being a kid is all about — playing outside, laughing, staying up past their bedtimes, and trying new experiences. We’re counting down the days until Lincoln’s last day of school — and then the fun really begins! We have a lot in store for this summer. It will definitely be busy busy — but it will be filled with making memories! Today I am partnering with the Floating Hospital for Children sharing how to keep your little ones safe this summer.

Summer Safety Tips For Kids

Dr. Emory Petrack, chief of pediatric emergency medicine at Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center, offers advice for keeping those you love most safe.

  • For starters, let’s talk about sun-safety. Children (and adults!) should always wear sunscreen with an SPF between 15 and 30, as well as sun appropriate clothing. Sunscreen should be reapplied after swimming. Wearing hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved clothing also offer additional sun protection. I’m a mom of two little boys. I also make sure they’re wearing a rash guard along with their bathing suit shorts.

Kids Summer Safety

  • The ticks are beyond awful this year. To protect your children from ticks and mosquitoes, always use an insect repellent when playing outside and wear proper clothing when hiking or in the woods. Wearing long socks and tucking your pants into them is a great idea, as well as wearing long-sleeved shirts. Spray your shoes with insect repellent containing DEET.
  • Proper bike safety is also very important. It is vital that children always wear a helmet and protective pads when riding a bicycle, scooter, or skateboard. The helmet should fit snugly around your child’s head and not slide easily. The chin strap should always be fastened.

Summer Safety

  • With the summer season, comes lots of time spent in the water. Parents and caregivers should closely supervise children, regardless of their age, whenever they are near or in the water. Never allow your kids to run near a pool. Toddler aged children and those younger should always have an adult in the water with them. An accident can happen in a matter of seconds. It is always best to be fully prepared by taking proper safety precautions.

About the Floating Hospital for Children

Located in downtown Boston, the Floating Hospital for Children is the full-service children’s hospital of Tufts Medical Center. It provides pediatric inpatient and outpatient services in every medical and surgical specialty. Floating Hospital’s strength is its size; a smaller, more intimate environment, which allows patients and families to feel more comfortable. Their patients are their inspiration, proving every day that you don’t have to be big to be strong. See this awe inspiring video below.

Don’t you just love that video. I find it so incredibly uplifting and inspiring. I feel grateful that we are located so closely to the hospitals in Boston. They truly provide exceptional care. Growing up with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, I traveled to Boston for my care. My surgeon was one of the best of the best. Any time I had a fracture, we would stabilize it close to home, and then be transferred to Boston. While no parent wishes their child to be injured, I feel my parents took great comfort knowing I was in exceptional care.

My children do not have Osteogenesis Imperfecta. And while they certainly don’t require the hospitalizations I endured as a child (thankfully), I appreciate what the Floating Hospital does for children who require that care. Treating their patients as if they are their own child, is truly amazing. These children may not be “big” but they are undoubtedly strong.
