Lincoln doesn’t go to school on Fridays. When he asked me at 9:30am, “Momma, school?” I thought it was sweet. He’s been in school 3 weeks now, and just loves it. It made me happy that he’s really enjoying himself there. I felt comforted that he is in a loving, nurturing, safe environment, that allows him to grow and learn.
Little did I know that at just about that same time, a tragic shooting was occurring at an elementary school in the state I live, just one hour from us.
What kind of person can kill an innocent child!? A FIVE YEAR OLD. TWENTY defenseless CHILDREN. WHY???
I’m not going to tell you all the details about the shooting, because you already know them.
Being a parent, this scares the hell out of me.
The moment I found out about this tragedy, I hugged my son. I breathed every inch of him in. Cherishing and being so thankful for his life. Thinking of all those parents, who would never hug their children again.
My heart aches for those families involved in the shooting. I cannot even fathom their pain. The thought of something happening to Lincoln…I just can’t. I cannot even begin to go there, because just the thought of it hurts my heart in a way I cannot even explain.
How can we keep our children safe? Schools should be safe!! What is this world coming to? What kind of world are our children growing up in? How can we change this? How can we keep this from happening ever again??
So many questions.
The only people who can stop this from ever happing is us. And honestly? That’s a pretty scary thing. Because while you and I might be on the same page with this, there are too many people who for whatever reason, are not. Too many people who are capable of causing harm to a child. How can we stop them??
I just don’t know.
But I do know, that I will raise my son to not be one of those people.
As parents, I think this is something we can all do. We have the power to raise incredible individuals. We have the power to prevent another tragedy in the future. Our children are the future of our society. Let’s raise them to be the best generation yet.
My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by Friday’s horrible tragedy. Those sweet, innocent children will always be remembered.
